Solar Pool Covers

A solar pool cover is a swimming pool cover which is designed to capture heat from the available sunlight and then channel it back into your pool.

It’s important to know that not all types of pool cover are capable of being combined with a solar cover. The two main types of solar covers are bubble pool covers and slatted pool covers.

Although solar covers are more commonly used for outdoor pools or a pool with an enclosure, as they are obviously more likely to capture sunlight, some indoor pools can be very effective in attracting sunlight, especially if they have a lot of windows in the walls / roof, and are south facing. Indeed, in some indoor pools, the glass magnifies the sunlight, enabling a solar cover to work even better than an outdoor pool, especially as the building will then help to limit heat loss to the air.

It is also worth noting that winter sunlight can be as effective as summer sun in generating solar gain – the problem in the winter tends to be that the overall lower temperature leads to rapid loss of whatever heat is captured.

Most good bubble covers are solar covers, designed to deliver solar heat, as well as insulating against the loss of pool heat, and this can be a very good way of gaining additional heat particularly in the summer months.

The majority of slatted covers are used on indoor pools and solar slats are available for those indoor pools which are most likely to benefit from solar gain. Our
