Manual Safety Covers

When properly closed, a manual pool safety cover provides pool safety at a significantly lower cost than an automatic safety cover. Manual safety covers are closed with the use of a tow rope and opened with a crank handle that ensures that the cover is removed from the pool evenly and correctly.

There are two different types of manual safety cover – an “easy” cover which is strengthened by lightweight aluminium bars which extend right across the width of the pool and a “mechanical” cover, which is similar to an automatic cover with top mounted tracks, but which is operated by a tow rope and handle rather than a motor.

Easy Safety Cover

An “easy” pool safety cover is the cheapest proper pool safety cover you can buy and is highly safe and effective. The cost of an easy safety cover for a 30’ pool is in the region of £3,500.

When your pool is covered with an easy pool safety cover, you can relax knowing that the pool is completely safe for adults, children and pets, as well as being protected from dirt, leaves and other debris due to the highly efficient seal it provides. An easy cover will also help with heat retention.

The easy cover uses half-round anodized aluminium supporting bars and modular panels of reinforced flexible composite material which are protected by an anti-abrasion treatment The cover’s panels and the aluminium tubes are interchangeable, so can be replaced at lower cost and individually on site, if necessary. This ease of replacement means you will never be without your safety cover.

The cover is wound back with a crank handle, which pulls the cover off the pool evenly and correctly. The cover is closed using a tow rope

The easy cover can be used all year round, which means that no separate winter cover is required. This system can only be mounted above the ground, but is perfect for all pool sizes and shapes up to 11m x 5.5m.

Mechanical Safety Cover

A mechanical pool safety cover is much cheaper than an automatic safety cover and provides exactly the same level of safety. However, due to the mechanics involved, a mechanical cover cannot be used on pools above 28’. The cost of a mechanical safety cover for a 28’ pool is currently around £5,000.

A mechanical cover is a true safety cover. It runs on tracks just like an automatic safety cover (though the tracks need to be top mounted, rather than underneath the copings), but instead of being operated by a hydraulic motor, it uses a simple gearbox with a crank handle. The cover is wound off the pool by cranking the handle and pulled back over the pool with a tow rope.

However, a mechanical cover cannot be used on a pool above 28’, as otherwise the weight of the cover and the water resistance make it very hard to operate. That said, it is suitable for nearly all shapes and sizes of pools which are 28’ or less in length.

Besides being completely safe, a mechanical safety cover will also stop dirt, leaves and other debris from getting into your pool, as well as helping with heat retention and reducing evaporation.
