Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

In nearly all cases, a heat pump is the best way to heat both outdoor and indoor swimming pools.

The heating efficiency, cost benefit and environmental impact of modern air source heat pumps is such that not only are they installed on virtually all new pools, but many people with existing pools are also installing heat pumps with the expectation of a very short payback time.

Although there are all sorts of different types of heat pumps, using heat sources as diverse as rivers, ponds, underground wells and ground heat, for reasons of ease of installation, cost and payback time, the type used for nearly all swimming pools is an air source heat pump. These are completely simple to install, requiring nothing more than an electrical supply.

Cost of Swimming Pool Heat Pumps

Depending on the size of pool you have to heat, a swimming pool heat pump can cost as little as £1,000. However, to get the best savings on your ongoing heating costs, it is important that the heat pump you choose is both good quality and big enough for the job in hand.

Cost Savings

With a good and correctly sized heat pump, the typical saving on annual heating costs for an outdoor or indoor pool that is used from April to October is between 30% and 50%, in many cases more. This is why heat pumps are being installed in so many non swimming pool areas, such as homes, offices and public buildings as the financial benefit (not to mention the environmental impact) is so considerable. If you work out your annual pool heating costs, say, take 40% and compare this to the cost of a heat pump, you will quickly see how fast a heat pump can pay for itself.

Reliability

Swimming pool heat pumps have been used for decades and heat pumps are at work all over the world providing safe, reliable pool heating highly cost efficiently. The technology itself is incredibly simple. It is basically like a fridge in reverse. This may help you appreciate why they are so reliable and quiet. And unlike your oil or gas boiler, they require no expensive annual servicing, which over a number of years is a very big saving.

Environmental Benefit

Heat pumps are also a very green alternative because they use up to 80% less fossil fuel to produce the same amount of end heat output. Think what that means to the planet – less fossil fuel, less depletion of natural resources, less pollution.
