Why NOT to shut your spa down over the colder months

As we’re moving into the colder months you may start to consider closing down your hot tub for the winter. We at Azure Pools & Hot Tubs highly recommend that you do just the opposite! The high-quality Artesian spas that we sell are built to withstand even the harshest British weather, so why not use your hot tub in winter as well? In our opinion there’s nothing better than watching the snow fall and settle on the ground around you whilst relaxing in a wonderfully warm spa. Equally, there’s nothing like watching the fireworks from your hot tub whilst welcoming in the new year.

If, however, this is not for you, and you really can’t bear the thought of stepping out of your lovely spa and having to face the elements during winter then you should take steps to avoid problems that can arise if you don’t prepare for the forthcoming season.

We would always advise you NOT to drain your hot tub. This is because no matter how thorough you think you have been, there is always the chance that there is some left over water in the internal plumbing which could freeze with disastrous consequences.

Our recommendation is that you drop the temperature of the spa down, and leave it running and filtering as normal, whilst dosing with Fi-Clor Chlorine Tablets with a floating dispenser.

It’s important that you continue to balance your pH and alkalinity, as if they drop too low or raise too high the chlorine won’t be able to work efficiently. You can find the products that you will need to balance the water in our online store.

Remember, it is important that you keep up to date with your water care, and ensure that you are opening your hot tub cover at least twice a week to ensure sufficient ventilation. Half a scoop of Non Chlorine Shock twice a week will also help to give the chlorine a boost and allow it to perform to the best of its abilities. You can order the Non Chlorine Shock online now and we will deliver it in just a few days.

If you are determined to drain the spa down, before you do so, consider clearing out the internal pipework with Fi-Clor Spa Pipework Cleaner to ensure that all of the areas of the spa that you can’t reach are kept spick and span too!
